Somali Pirates Have Rare Request For Ship Release (The Maritime Executive, Wednesday, March 7, 2012).
Written by Abdirisak
Last month, a Panama-flagged vessel transporting goods to Somaliland was hijacked and held by Somali pirates. The pirates are now demanding that fellow pirates being held in jails in the breakaway territory be freed in order for the ship’s safe return. Somaliland has been independent from Somalia since 1991 and maintains relative stability, but remains internationally unrecognized. One member in the pirate gang holding the MV Leila told a local news outlet that aside from a small ransom for the vessel, they are also requesting that Somaliland authorities release their comrades. The man states that the ship will not…

Seychelles Plans Landmark Transfer of 19 Convicted Pirates to Somali Prison: Washingtonpost.
Written by Abdirisak
MONTAGNE POSEE, Seychelles — Like the other 92 Somali pirates held in the Seychelles’ hilltop prison, where inmates can glimpse a small, tantalizing slice of this island nation’s crystal blue water, Ali Mohammed insists he is innocent. “No pirates. Fishermen,” the tall, wiry 50-year-old insisted. The tiny island nation of the Seychelles is punching far above its weight in the fight against Somali piracy. Pirates make up 20 percent of the 500-person prison population in the main Montagne Posee Prison. International navies dock on the islands. The U.S. flies aerial surveillance drones from here. And the Seychelles is one of…

The World Must Recognize Somaliland On Its Historical Borders (By Ibrahim Hassan Gagale).
Written by Abdirisak
The Arab World with the leadership of Saudi Arabia must show the courage of recognizing Somaliland Republic on the basis of its own historical, colonial borders as the diplomatic and international recognition of every Arab country is based on its own historical, colonial borders so the West will follow to recognize Somaliland too. The United Nations, African Union, African States, or the Arab World did not draw or make the current borders of African States and Arab World. All the borders of Arab World and African independent states had been drawn by the colonial powers of Europe. The independence, statehood,…

The Joys Of Investing In Somaliland (BBC News).
Written by Abdirisak
"How are you going to make money in a country that doesn't even exist?" That was probably the question that many people had at the back of their minds when Mohammed Yusef told them he would invest in Somaliland. Others perhaps did not even know Somaliland had declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and that, in spite of not having been recognised internationally, it does have - unlike Somalia - a working political system and a strong business sector. Mr Yusef of course knew. Although he now manages a very successful investment firm in the United Kingdom, Invicta Capital…

Kenya Develops Plan For Satellite Region of Jubaland on Somali Border.
Written by Abdirisak
It is the middle of the night in Eastleigh, a district of Nairobi mainly occupied by the Somali community. Jamal Sharif has not slept for 48 hours, steadily chewing miraa stems, which contain a mild amphetamine that dispels fatigue and makes people talkative. Sharif is terrified the rest of Kenya might "attack and kill" Somali residents, and even those of Somali extraction. Operation Linda Nchi (Protect the Nation), which Kenya launched in mid-October, is already yielding poisonous fruit. The army sent about 2,000 men across the border into Somalia to combat Islamist al-Shabaab insurgents who control much of the south.…
