As members of the staff and the Management of Candlelight for Health, Education & Environment (CLHE), we are pleased to learn that Shukri Ismail, Chairperson of Candlelight, will be honored to receive,in the presence of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodhman Clinton, the International Crisis Group’s (ICG) 2011 In Pursuit of Peace Award on Friday, 16th December in New York.
The award is given for her dedication and her contribution to development work and promotion of peace in some of the world’s most conflict-affected regions.
Shurki is one of the founders of Candlelight and its chairperson and she (together with her team and staff) has been instrumental in making Candlelight on of the largest and mostimpactful organizations in Somaliland.
Also, a founding member of NAGAAD Network, the largest women network in Somaliland, Shukri has been very active campaigner for women’s rights.
Shuikri is also involved in democratization, peace building. She served as a member of Somaliland Electoral Commission and a current member of African Democracy Forum committeewhich is based in South Africa.
She also a member of Somaliland Independent Scholar’s Group – a group which follows closely the current issues arising from the democratization process and disseminates its positionspapers through the media outlets .
Shukri is the sort of people that never seek fame, public attention, acknowledgement or wealth. She is a very modest human being who's life objective is to help others, an example to us all."
